I have 7 containers of hops sitting by my window now. When does the ground usually freeze here? I'll have a backyard as of November 1.

If the ground is too hard, what should I cover the plants with to keep them alive in the winter?

Ground'll start freezing near the end of the month to mid november normally.

Burlap. You can get rolls of it from most home-supply stores.

Just stake 3 peices of wood, make a teepee and wrap it, and it'll survive, so long as it's meant to survive in zone 4 conditions for plants...

For my in-ground plants, I just cut them completely down to the ground, throw on a couple inches of compost, and that's it...
