Title: Substitution for a Czech Lager Yeast
Post by: ECH on September 30, 2015, 02:57:16 AM
As I don't have the means to lager, I can't really use a lager yeast.

I want to try my hand at a Pilsner Urquell clone, but it of course calls for a Czech Lager, or Czech Pilsner yeast.

I have used German Ale yeast in place of German Lager yeast before to great results, just curious about what I could use as a sub for Czech Lager yeast. Not like there is a Czech Ale yeast out there.

My first thought would be 1056 American Ale, but thought I would ask the question and see what you guys thought.

There's no real substitute for lager yeast. But you might want to try kolsch yeast. They describe it as a pseudo lager yeast because you can ferment it at a higher temp with some lager characteristics. Just bottle it and stick it in the fridge for cold conditioning.

WY2112 is a California lager yeast, might we worth a try as well. I've made a couple beers with it with good results.

I believe Noble Grape either stocks it or can get it quickly
