Thanks Rob, I may give pumpkin beer another shot. I brewed one a few years ago when doing partial mash. Wasn't great, wasn't bad.

The last two years I used the recipe from '80 classic styles'. I've never been able to get any conversion from adding the pie pumpkins in the mash so I think I'm going to do this recipe this year.

I can only drink a couple of glasses a year.  But I figured others would be interested.

I share the same feelings, I generally only have a few bottles for myself and give the rest away. This is one of the most popular beers I make among my family and friends.

I've had good results with my pumpkin ales but I've never actually used real pumpkin. I've used squash which is still a gord but with actual flavor and another time with just the spices. Both were quite tasty! I just make a good red ale recipe and add the spices with a tincture made with spiced rum and then soaked the nutmeg, cinnamon, ginger and sometimes cloves. I add the tincture to the keg.
I normaly do 10 gallon batches so I split it in half add the tincture to one and dry hop the other also different yeast normaly an english strain for the "pumpkin" and american for the dry hopped one.

I'm thinking of making a pumpkin beer Friday but I might skip the pumpkin this year. Just the spices. I don't know what it'll do to the body. I know I'll probably save some time. Yes, I'm lame.
I know there are several commercial brewers out there that don't put pumpkin in theirs.

I might do the same - roasting the pumpkin / butternut squash is a pain and I'm not sure it adds much...

Yea I think using just the spices will do the trick. Sometimes I'll use roasted butternut squash but I'm not sure how much it adds.
