Did anyone pick up this year's beer advent calendar?
My wife suprized me with one yesterday.
I think I'll keep her after all... ;)
-
Pam brought one home yesterday as well!
-
Hope the beers in it are worth it. At $147, that's and avg. of $6 a beer, better not be too many $3-$4 beers in it.
-
Today is the first day for the Advent Calendar. Some Italian APA. It's chilling in the fridge.
-
1st
Birrificio Del Doge APA
- Pours an opaque amber colour.
- Highly carbonated.
- Citrusy floral aroma.
- 1/4" lingering white head.
- Malty sweetness with a mild lingering bitterness. Flavous of caramel and citrus.
All in all a solid first one. I'd like to try a fresh one this one was bottled in March but I'm quite happy with it. At least until I get to Italy...

Day #2 of the Advent Beer Calendar. Today is a Hoppy Bavarian - from Bavaria no less. I'm interested in this one but I'm trying hard not to create any expectations. If I recall reading the hops on the label are: Cascade, Centennial, Chinook and possibly Citra (?). I'm assuming this is a lager. Either way this is interesting because I would've assumed more Noble Hops from Germany. (I have a weak spot for craft lagers but not often impressed. I wish I had the patience to make some more often.) So far we have Italy and Germany represented. It's chilling in the fridge.

This beer is a DIPA. No Lagers here.

2nd
Bavarian Winter by Camba
-Pours a hazy amber colour.
-1"+ of fluffy head that settles out to about 1/8" across the surface and holds.
-Highly carbonated.
-Tropical & citrus aroma with a little malt in the background.
-Low bitterness with nice hop characteristics all in all very decent not what I expected for a Bavarian beer.
-
3rd
Laiska Jaakko, Organic Dark Lager
-Pours dark redish brown.
-Very little head.
-Decent carbonation.
-Aroma and taste remind me of brown bread.
-A little bitterness at the end.
-I haven't had a lot of dark lagers it's almost like a watered down stout with more carbonation...
I prefered the first two to this one but drinkable none the less.
-
4th
The Tickety Brew Company, Rose Wheat Beer
-Pours a hazy straw colour.
-Very little head retention.
-Nice carbonation.
-Aroma of sour rose water and ginger...
-The flavour has a little spicyness with some floral notes.
-This is quite unique they either used some bugs to sour it a bit or it was an accident either way its great...
-This one is the best one so far. I'm saving the dregs from this one to add to one of my next brews.
-
Agreed, that was a very pleasant beer.
-
5th
De Mons, Inveralmond Brewery
-Pours an amber colour.
-Little to no head.
-Decent carbonation.
-Belgian ale aroma.
-Flavours of raisin and overripe fruit.
-It's a bit on the sweet side but that's fine it's gonna be my desert...
-
6th
Sweet Krampus by Biermanufaktur Loncium
- Pours a very dark redish brown.
- 1/4 off white head that dissipates quickly.
- Appropriate carbonation for style.
- Aroma of raisins and toast.
- Flavour kinda reminds me of my dads homemade rootbeer in a good way though. A bit like spiced raisins if that makes any sense...
- This is supposed to be a Milk Stout but it lacks the roastyness you'd expect in a stout.
That being said it's pretty good I like the spicyness of it and it gets better as it warms.
-
7th
The Crimson Bird by Naparbier, saison with raspberries.
- Pours a hazy pink.
- 1/2" of head that dissapates to around 1/8".
- Nice carbonation.
- Aroma of Sweet Tarts and raspberries.
- The flavour is of tart raspberries with a great mouthfeel.
- This one is very good kinda on par with day 4's rose wheat.
I'm loving this calender!

Silver Bottle, by Eggenberg
- Pours a clear yellow.
- Almost no head.
- Proper carbonation for style.
- Smells like a lager and tastes like one too.

- 1/4" of dark tan head that quickly diapates to a 1/8" ring.

-Flavour is spicy with a hint of juniper and hop bitterness.
This one is quite tasty. It doesn't have as much saison character as you'd expect but very good. I have a beer from these guys in my cellar it's a flanders red called Lief & Leed. I'm really looking forward to it now...

12th
Pukki by Browar Wasosz
- Pours a pale straw colour.
- 1/4" head that dissipates to an 1/8" ring.
- Aroma is earthy and smoky.
- Lightly carbonated and very thin.
- Flavours of smoke and wheat.
Not much to this one. It's quite interesting I've never had a Grodziskie style beer before. It's more of a warm weather beer not one I would pick after clearing a snow covered driveway. After I'm done this I think I'm gonna get into a stout or brown ale something dark and full bodied anyways.

I didn't get anything fishy from it but it was very one dimensional.

- Aroma of fresh cut apples and pear.
- Carbonation is medium high.

I'd say this would be a great sour to get people interested in the style. It's not BAM in your face but very refreshing. Keep em coming...

OO, Imperial Baltic Porter by Pohjala
-Pours almost black.

-
Yeah, this one was a pint of motor oil. SWMBO had a small sip and wanted no part of it. Of course I sacrificed and drank it.

Gno More Gnomes a colaboration between Brewski and Evil Twin Brewing.
-Pours dark amber colour, a bit chunky and hazy.
-Little to no head.
-Medium carbonation.
-Aroma of caramel and over ripe fruit.
-Flavours of caramel, alcohol and some hop bitterness.
It's a bit boozy but that's good tonight... I was hopping for it to have more of that rich maltyness that I expect from a barlywine but all in all it's a good cold weather sipper.

17th
Black Alligator by Monyo Brewing
-Pours opaque black.
-3/4" head that slowly disapates to about 1/4".
-Medium high carbonation.
-Aroma is of spice, fruit, roasted grain and alcohol.
-Flavours are of spice, dark chocolate and a bit boozy.
I don't think I've had many black saisons. This is an interesting one not as much roasty character as youd expect for a beer this dark. It's quite tasty and definitely a cold weather sipper.
-
18th
Molotov, Birificio Del Ducato
-Pours a hazy straw colour.
-Very little head with a thin ring that hangs around.
-Medium carbonation.
-Aroma is spicy and herbaceous.
-Flavour is Belgian in character with some spicyness and vegetal qualities.
The label states they use wasabi but to be honest I've never had wasabi before. But it definitely has some spicy qualities. It's quite tasty overall. With a name like Molotov I expected quite a bit more heat.

Great job @Roger (http://nbcba.org/forum/index.php?action=profile;u=1911)
-
Now that it's all said and done... worth the money?
-
Well I think so. It gave me the opportunity to try 24 beer that aren't locally available that I've never had before or even heard of. Some were better than others some were amazing only one wasn't to my liking but to be honest it could have been one of the best examples of a smoked wheat ale the is...
I received it as a gift so I didn't actually buy it but I enjoyed quite a bit. It gave me the opportunity to sit down and relax with a craft beer every evening for one of the busiest and crazy months of the year. For that reason alone it's worth it to me. ;)
