During the time I spent in the beer store yesterday ridiculing all the BMC ass-hattery I saw Moosehead has a "Ginger" version of their light beer.

That got me to thinking about adding ginger to something like a blonde for a bit of flavour / bite.  So anyone ever brewed using ginger (Ginger beers don't count)?

Moose Ginger blows. One bottle actually was enough to turn me off from trying ginger in beer for the time being. Ricards White did the same to me for coriander....

Really disappointing cause I really, really liked the blackberry last year....

I agree...the moose ginger beer is disgusting...i know why they sell em in 12's...so ppl are forced to find a home for the remaining 11....

I've never brewed with ginger before, but I would imagine you wouldn't need too much in a 5-gallon batch, especially in a Blonde Ale, that doesn't have a lot of flavors/bitterness to compete with the ginger flavor/aroma.

I'd say no more than 1/4 - 1/2 tsp of powdered ginger, added somewhere b/w 5 minutes and flameout. Real ginger, chopped or grated, would be a larger amount.
