If I had to wager a guess I'd say you have a tiny leak near/on that guage and its spitting out some vapor at the same time.

I found the leak but it seems like the gauge has completely failed. I'm assuming I can replace that fairly easily.

I see there's a check valve, but do you think that the pressure in one of the kegs (the keg was pretty full) was greater than what you were giving it from the tank/regulator, that the beer would've snuck up in the gas line?

In general, It's advisable to at least visually examine the gas line when cleaning/swapping the beer lines. There can be some moisture (and or beer that crept up) in those lines. It's not a great feeling when you see funk in the gas line. Wondering how long it's been there, etc.
