I kinda thought it would be an interesting experiment to all brew the same thing just to see how technique and equipment would make a significant difference. But obviously I'm the only one... :pal:

I like the idea of there being a list of mandatory ingredients and also having some creativity. Like for example having a set grain bill but you get to choose one or two specialty grains, same with the hops or yeast.

I think we could do a challenge that impose the same grain bill and bittering hops and leave the dry hop and yeast open.

I recently watched a episode of chop & brew and that is what they did. The difference between the beers was apparently quite interesting.

The black box project is also interesting, but I think it's very wild card and would be hard to judge and compare.

I'd definitely prefer the grain bill to be left to the brewer by selecting from the grain available.

Hi, I'M in for this...

If you are looking for hops, I might have a good solution.

I have this hops from almost a year.
I have 3.5 pound left of polaris at 22 IBU and 7 pound of Willamette 5.2 IBU.

I don't know how much people are interested to participate but I will give this 10 pound for free. We might have enough hops for 15-20 people recipe... I think.

I think we should put some limitations on the hops. for a couple different reasons.

If we leave hop selection open ended without any limits on how much we can use, my prediction is that people won't take advantage of the grain availbale and likely many of us (including myself) will show up with a 95% two row beer that's hammer with late boil hop and dry hop additions, and we're basically judging an IPA competition. That would be the safe play for most, including myself ... but if people are forced to use a couple different hop varieties outside of our comfort zone (with limitations on how many ounces permitted to use), could have some more interesting entries.

That's my only concern with not limiting the amount of hops used ... if people know this is only judging for "best in show", i think most people will just try to hammer with hops because those will typically get voted by our club as the best in show.

Hi,

I made a list if people are interesting that could be the BOX contents.

You have 2 unlimited BASE malt:
2row malt unlimited.
Wheat malt unlimited.

4 speciality grain: (you use the X amount you like, max 300G)
300G of Munich.
300G of Amber.
300G of Cara 60L.
300G of Honey.

Hops: (I have this amount for 20 BOX )+ (you use the X amount you like)
75G of Polaris.
130G of Willamette.

Yeast will be your choice...

We could always, and I can't believe I'm saying this, make a stipulation that it can't be a hop forward beer?

Jake

Sounds like we'll have a good turnout next Saturday at beer meeting. Lets arm wrestle and the winner gets to make rules.

Or we can just have it as topic of discussion at meeting and hammer out the concept/stipulations.

Ok, I will give you guys n other idea... because I want to start this...I'm in for any other reason....
:chug:
You need to use this in your recipe...

-Use only 2 base grain...( 2Row,pils,wheat,maris otter, rye, oats, etc...)
-Use only 1 spice.
-use only 1 fruit or a flavoring fruit.
-use only 1 kind of hop.
-use only 1 kind of speciality grain. And
-Choose your yeast..
Open for your comment.........................

Toss in a max amount of grams of hops to use like 30 or60 g

I think we should have narrow it down to a style, for example say American Pale Ale with minimum 1 uniquely New Brunswick ingredient (and you can't all do fiddleheads).
