Saw this recipe a couple months back in BYO:

So here is the deal. I don't have any AG experience and would like to try a batch before I buy all my equipment. I'm looking for someone to brew with that has a setup where we could both take 5 gal home to ferment.

I'll supply the hops and yeast, you supply equipment and malt. Sound fair?

robcoombs

That hop bill looks delicious! When were you looking to brew? I have all the malt aside from the caraamber. I wouldn't mind brewing this with you. To be up front though I've never brewed anything bigger than 6gal. So you may want to brew this with someone who is experienced with 10 gal batches. Your call, no worries either way.

I see it has 1056 in the recipe. Do you have the gear to make starters? You'll need one with an OG of 1.079.

Cuba

The only problem I have with a 6 gal batch is that the smallest fermenter I have is 5 gal. And I would like for both of us to take something away after the brewing is over!

As for starters I do not have all the gear yet. I've just been buying the liquid yeast and assuming they are alive when the smack pack works.

robcoombs

I meant that I only have experience brewing 6 gallon batches, or smaller. I'm fully willing to brew 10gal. Just mentioned it as I thought you may want to brew with someone with each experience brewing batches that large.

Cuba

Ok well lets giver a try!

As for a brewing date, any weekday after 5. I'm also free next weekend. I don't get my schedule too far in advance so it would probably be better to work around your schedule. I'm pretty flexible.

I'm also not in a huge rush; still waiting for a couple pounds of hops to arrive in the mail shortly.

robcoombs

After 5 on a week day? I'm too damn old for that lol. Seriously though I often have to be up at 5am so brewing through the week generally doesn't work for me. Sometimes I'll split the brew day into two parts. But that wouldn't be convenient for this.

So it will have to be a weekend for me. Let me know when you get the rest of the hops and we'll work something out.

Where did you order them from?

Cuba

Half from everwood and the other half is from brewers pantry. The rest of what I need should be here July 7th.

Hoping to try this recipe out tomorrow. As it will be my first AG brew, I thought I would post what I plan on doing so someone can correct any mistakes before I make them!

Here is my step by step plan:

1. Boil 15L of water for sparging later. Transfer to other vessel, cover and wrap with blanket.

2. Mash thickness 1.5qt/lbs. Initial mash volume = 1.5 × 15 = 22.5 qt = 21.3L

3. Mashing steps: Strike water temp 61C. Add grain, protein rest 30 min @ 56C. Bring to 66C and hold for 60 min. Bring to 77C and hold for 5 min.

4. Sparge with enough water to bring boil volume to 28.4L. Sparge temp 68.3C, adjust temp with boiling water.

5. Add first wort hops before boil starts. 1oz citra + 1oz simcoe

6. Bring to boil, total boil time 60 min.

7. Hop additions

8. Cool wort to 20C, transfer to fermentor and pitch yeast.

Etc.

So thats my plan; feel free to correct anything. I have the following questions:

Did I add the "first wort hops" in the correct spot? Am I still suppose to boil for an hour even though the first hop addition is only @ 15 min?

Thanks for your help!

robcoombs

I would chill a little lower before pitching. Closer to 16C.

Yes you still boil for 60 minutes. Though looking at the recipe it says 90 minute boil. Have you adjusted that on your own?

robcoombs

You can add first wort hops as soon as you start collecting wort.

Cuba

Thanks rob, no i overlooked where it says 90 minutes. Ill adjust that

robcoombs

You could shorten to 60 minutes, just adjust your first wort additions to match the IBUs. It won't be the same beer but your brew day would be that much shorter.

robcoombs

How did you make out with this @Cuba ?

Cuba

Got too busy with school this weekend. Looks like Thursday might work as a brew day though.

First and last time I start my brew day @ 2pm...
