Plastic Corks + Metal Twist-Clamps

Hmm... When I looked at that picture it suddenly became apparent what the problem with my cunning plan is: those bottles are green, not brown. Anyone ever hear of a brown-glass champagne bottle that didn't have Chimay in it? :P

Meanwhile I've been drinking "The End of the World" (La Fin du Monde) -- the Unibroue amber ale. The bottles for that have the same problem, and are brown.

I'm going to bottle up half my AG IPA in a bunch of them using the plastic corks + metal tags... will see how things go compared to the bottle-capped equivalent.

as long as you store the bottles in a dark place away from direct sunlight you probably would be fine put them in a box close the lid and the rate at which you drink beer shouldnt be a problem ya wanker  :twisted:

I suspect with the rate at which I drink beer I could leave them outside in the summer in clear glass bottles, but that's besides the point. I will pedantically follow good practice in the hope that it will make up for my lack of imagination :P

Ive heard of spray painting the bottles Black tape off the top 2 "

That's actually not a bad idea... you could stencil something badass on the side, too... hmm...

I wonder how well spraypaint would hold up to oxy-clean + star-san cleaning...

and those cheap ass champagne bottles like baby duck WILL accept a beer cap..... ;)  ;) bottle depot for cheap bottles

ok, I used a bunch of bottles from Unibroue (Fin du Monde 750ml's) to bottle an american wheat yesterday. Observation is mostly that the hassle involved in getting the damn (plastic) corks in there and then clamping them is a major pain in the arse. The clamping in particular -- I suspect there may be a machine to do that properly, as doing it by hand is a recipe for pain. Moreover the cork + clamp combo is relatively very expensive compared to crown caps -- depending on your sources it looks like about 10x more expensive: I pay about five bucks for 100 crowns, and I paid 15 bucks for 30 corks/clamps.

Mostly I'd recommend that if people are going to use larger beer bottles, that they stick with those that can be capped with crowns.

I'll probably revisit this with proper champagne/sparkling wine corks when I get a corker, but the clamp + cost issue still stands.

2 liter soda water bottles will work, as long as less then about 2.5 vol C02. Just don't use bottles that contained something flavourful like pop. Winekitz sells caps for soda bottles, I think.

Kyle: yeah I've pretty much decided to go with that for the next batch of "light" (3% -- a real summertime drink) ginger beer I make... I have no shame when it comes to ginger-beer, as I've been producing the stuff since I was a kid (in plastic bottles -- I actually used to ferment the stuff *in* the bottles using bread yeast and de-gas once a day... the result was all over the place.)

Jmac: aye I noticed their porter, but I have to admit I'm not a fan so can't bring myself to drink it just for the bottles. If anyone knows an NB liquor that's selling something other than their porter in larger bottles, please let me know :P
