Old fire extinguisher tanks

So I found a sweet buy on some fire extinguisher tanks, sizes vary from 5lb to 20lb. Anybody got experience having them converted over to a co2 tank? Not going to purchase if having a valve and hydro certified is going to be more of a pain then they are worth. But I can buy the entire lot for 30 bucks.

Once you get the right valve on the tank, you should be able to get a hydro pretty easily.  No idea how much the valves cost though.  My first tank was an old fire extinguisher.

I'd be interested in a 5lb tank if you do get them changed over.

You can get the valves at Atlantic Fire & Safety not sure on cost though the hydro will run you about $35.

Or use one as a real fire ext. CO2 is great for putting out fires without the big mess of a chemical ext...

Might actually be worth it then, 20lb for under a 100 bucks. I wanted to take my current 5lb and put it on my little mig welder, and upgrade the others. Will definitely set the 5lb aside for you though Chris if I grab them.

I have a few converted fire extinguishers.  the valves are about $30, hydro test is about $35, and then a fill.  Great way to get a tank relatively cheap compared to a new tank + fill.

btw, I know a guy here in Moncton who set himself up with a 60LB filling tank (dip tube to the bottom of tank) and fill his buddies' 5 pounders for them.  he charges just enough to keep himself in free co2...good deal all around.

Would be ideal for someone in Fredericton to do, BUT does take some time and effort on someone's part.

Hmmm.  I wonder if this is a feasible solution for us.  Maybe we could buy a $100lb tank to do fills.
