Kegerator -Build or Buy?
« on: August 24, 2011, 10:18:03 AM »
Hey guys, wondering whether its worth it to buy a kegerator or to just buy a mini fridge and a conversion kit and assemble it myself?
Cheers!

If you're remotely handy, building will offer many more options and places to put kegs than anything affordable pre-made.

Also, I'd consider getting a freezer + temperature controller rather than a fridge, as they generally offer more room.

Even if it's not frost-free, you can just get some baking soda to deal with that :P

Depends what you're doing with it. If you use it as a fermentation chamber it would be higher than say if you were lagering. I keep mine at 2-3C at the moment.

aah I see said the blind man. I was hoping you'd found it locally - I've never used ebay and don't plan on starting if I don't have to.

I bought a 4.4 cubic foot bar fridge and just stuck a keg and CO2 in the fridge.  I'm still using the pinic tap to dispense ( so I have to open the door) until I get around to installing a tap in the door.  Easy peesy.

Bar fridge - $80 used
Perlic tap, shank and misc pieces  - ~$70 via Hopdawgs.ca
--------------------------------
$150

Dave, a little work with some 1/4" plywood and some stain and you could get away with a keezer in the damn living room!  (that's my plan anyway)
