Need some grain & hops for a recipe I want to try making :)
« on: December 30, 2011, 11:16:15 AM »
I was going to order from NG but I'm thinking maybe someone might be willing to part with some grain and hops for $ here.

The grain and hops bill is as follows:

6lb of pale 2 row
3lb of german wheat malt
1lb of carapils
1lb of crystal 40l
1oz of cascade whole leaf
1oz of willamette whole leaf

And if someone has a package of US-05 I'd buy that from you too...

If you can meet this or part of this bill gimmie a price for what you can meet :).
Same with the yeast package, if you can give me a price on that too.

This beer is an experiment ;), so if I can save some $ buying from you guys instead of NG, it'd be an awesome deal for me.
If it works out I'll happily post the recipe to our brew blog. It's for a cherry wheat that I'm calling "Cherry Popper" :).

If I can get the grain pre-milled that's better but if not I might have to borrow someone's mill for a quick job ;).

I have surprisingly few of these ingredients, but I'm sure others will have them.

So Brew nailed it, and showed me something else I needed to buy :) <big grin>, and I got that too.

It was great meeting him, I can't wait till next weekend to meet others from the club.
I'm really looking forward to it.

As for brew day, since the night is crap for weather and I don't want to have to chase down my propane burner as it slides down my driveway (stupid freezing rain and rain *sigh*), and I have to make the cherry extract anyway, I'm just
going to do up the cherries tonight and will brew during the day tomorrow instead.

Brew, I'll keep you in on the details through PM just so you know how it turned out since it's based somewhat on your recipe :). And when it's finished I'll bring you a few bottles of it to try if it turns out to meet my "exacting standards" :D.

So the brew went off without a hitch. Smelled amazing.
Made my own cherry extract by blending the fruit, and boiling it down.
Very strong flavoured extract, hoping it really shines through.

Hit my boil target spot on. Must have had better than expected efficiency.
Target og was 1.044 according to beersmith...

Measured og at pitching was 1.054.

Oops... ;)

Looking forward to this brew.

Fermentation seems good. Will keep you all posted.

10 points!  That's quite a disparity.

Well a small amount of that might be attributable to the home-made cherry extract, but it wouldn't be the full 10 points.
The thing was supposed to be a session beer. I'm thinking there's gonna be some pretty heavy sessions  :frazzled:.

It just means my efficiency was kickass. This three step mashing and then sparge and boil down to 5.5 gals from 11gals
is da bawm.

don't worry, 1054 O.G. is still a fairly low abv, easy drinking beer, especially in winter. Homemade extracts can add a considerable amount to the original gravity.

You boiled down from 11 to 5.5?  That must have been time consuming.

It was, but I find when I do that I get better beer... so it's worth doing. :D

Yeah looking it up on a beer calculator the beer will be about 6% or so... not a big deal, I just figured it would be lower (4.5 to 5.0) making it a session beer.

I'd agree that the homemade extract could add considerable amount to the OG if it were comparable volumes to the wort or it was really *really* boiled down, but it wasn't, it was reasonably thin liquid and not much extract (just under 1/2 gallon, including the mash-bag which I put in the primary (boiled) along with the liquid...), so I don't think its added 10 points. I could be wrong :)... It was pretty flavourful stuff tho... very strong flavoured... hopefully that comes out in the beer.

I hope this brew turns out as planned... it could be some good stuff. :D

My money's with your efficiency being about 85% rather than 70%, plus the cherry extract adding in a couple more points.

Wow, is fermentation ever active on this one. Pitched the yeast dry, took a while to adapt but by last night it was firmly outgassing about once every .5 sec through the blowoff tube (at 68F)...

I woke up this morning and went and checked on it first thing ;)... still outgassing like mad, in some cases continuous bubble trains through the blowoff tube (still at 68f).
Steadily rising krausen too... :D
