Title: MB Bottle Brew Premium Pilsner
Post by: brew on February 01, 2015, 09:15:41 PM
So I saw this at the coop for 4.99 and couldnt pass it up. Made for a pretty heavy brew day, open the bottle, pour in the included yeast vial and put on the supplied "spunding" cap. How simple is that for 2L of beer? Thinking about it, the supplied wort could be really good (or not). But it would be an easy way to distribute wort... ill bring some to a meeting when its done...

I think something like this is what a lot of my friends and family picture when I tell them I homebrew.

Any idea what the gravity is on those? I've heard people using them for starters. That would be too easy!

Good question - it advertises 5% on the label, so maybe 1.050 or so? Its hopped already I hope but sure why not use it for a starter? 2L of wort... although it might be a bit more expensive than using DME or corn sugar...

I see they're using the word "Premium" pretty loosely

Heh heh - its the feeling one gets looking at it eh... although, what if I took some of my own wort and put it in a bottle like that with a few grams of US-05 strapped to it? Would it still be OK to ferment and drink? I suppose there might be a "light" issue, perhaps the hops will be total'd after sitting on a shelf like that in a clear bottle. Guess I'll find out in week or two... I have to say though, packaging it with an extra cap that works like a spunding valve is a neat idea. It has a rubber ish cover with a tiny hole in it - I wonder if it will carb the bottle properly? I may try it with some of my own wort at some point, maybe with a 500ml or 1L bottle next time I have more wort than I need going into the primary...

It would be sort of interesting if we did a club contest where you had to use the original bottle plus up to 5 ingredients of your choice.

Sounds like a fun thing to try!
