I've been brewing from kits for the past 20 years or so, and have generally enjoyed it (except for the very first batch when it had too much alcohol, so I skipped adding sugar to the bottles, because I didn't want it to get stronger. D'oh!). I've experimented with flavouring my brews; my current batch is a Vanilla Blonde. We'll see how THAT turns out. Bottled on Tuesday.
I'm just about to try my first batch from scratch of something simple, I think, to kind of get the feel for it.
I'm expecting to be able to learn great things from the current membership!

P.S. I didn't waste that first batch. Once I figured out what "priming sugar" was for, I over-primed by next batch and mixed them for a light carbonation. Well, those that actually survived until the next batch was ready. Really, flat beer only tastes bad for about the first 1/2 bottle... :)
