Should I be worried??
« on: March 10, 2012, 11:38:49 AM »
So I made a starter Thursday night with wyeast 1762 Belgian Alley II.  It was packaged 7 months ago and as of this morning it hasn’t started yet.  Should I be worried?

I wa suppose to brew today but I'll postpone it till I have an active starter...

As I recall, brew had issues with some Belgian yeast taking a few days to start.  Just keep aerating the wort, and see what happens tomorrow.

I know but I figured that if I'd make a starter it should take off.  I was planing on a 2 step + decant.  I only paid 4$ so it's not a big deal but it's just that I was planning to brew today :(

Maybe it's done. I just leave it for a day on my stir plate.  Stop it and see how much settles.  I wouldn't be surprised if its ready to go.

Yeah I made a starter with my 1729 Scottish last week. There was no krausen really, just a few bubbles (like from when I poured the pack in). The package did expand about 4 or 5 hours after I "smacked" it though. So after two days of nothing, I added in 500ml more boiled DME. Still nothin. After one more day I stopped the stir plate and let it settle and low and behold there was close to an inch of yeast settling on the bottom. Stuck it in the fridge for a few days, used it and it has taken off nicely. I guess perhaps a yeast starter doesn't necessarily have to have a bunch of action going on to be doing its thing...
