Making second "weaker" brew from spent mash.
« on: February 10, 2012, 11:30:38 AM »
Has anyone ever tried making a smaller weak batch of beer from adding additional sparge water to a high gravity mash?

Example.  you make a big 1.080 OG brew with 20LBS of grain, then recirculate an additional 5GAL of sparge water through the mash tun for a second lighter or weaker version of the high gravity brew?

Just curious.

I've been thinking about doing this lately.  I think you'd probably want to make a 10 gallon batch to try and get a larger amount of the first runnings for your strong wort, and still have enough for a respectable amount of the weaker wort.

Nice, thanks for that Richard.

I think I'm going to consider this type of brewing as an occasional technique when I want two strengths of the same brew.  The weaker being available on tap for "non brewer" guests!  hehe!

I'm assuming you could get mightly close to the 100% efficiency mark too.

So far as I'm aware you actually do a second mash, not just split the first and second runnings up. Would be interested to know how it turns out if you try it.

Me too because I had considered attempting partigyle mashing as well. I had considered making a "big beer" such as a very high gravity stout, and then taking the second mashing and sparge to make a weak stout or porter.

Found this article on "parti-gyle" style brewing, it's history, etc.

Thanks for pointing me in the right direction Richard.
