Title: Disturbing the grain bed
Post by: Jake on June 21, 2011, 05:16:05 PM
So I did my first batch yesterday and (think) I made the mistake of stirring the grain bed durring the run-off to extract more of the wort, resulting in very cloudy wort. Upon researching this today after believing it was a no-no, the consensus is that stirring up the grain bed while it is draining into my boil pot is a rookie move lol.
Some online posts have suggested transferring the beer into a secondary fermenter after a couple days (within the first week) for that the beer isn't sitting on the trub for a couple weeks.
Any thoughts? or just leave it alone?

what I usually do is when you add your sparge water place a collander or pasta strainer ontop of the grain bed and pour your sparge water over top of that slowly maintaining 1/2 inch of water above the grain bed

That or use some irish moss + whirlpool it at the end of the boil.

Either way it'll likely fine out on its own given time after the ferment.
