The Ranco ETC-112000 this unit requires a 24VAC input.

what the hell does that mean

You just need a transformer to take household electrical (120ish volts, alternating current) and make it into 24. Does the temp controller also specify a current requirement, generally listed in "A" or "mA"? It's fine to get a transformer that can output more than the needed current, but not one that is rated for less.

The choices in your town are fairly limited, but just call a couple of hardware stores, they should have something that will work. Also, make sure you get a transformer that says something along the lines of:

Input 120Vac (110-130 is fine for the number here)
Output 24Vac (try to match that number), **mA (the number of mA being or exceeding the current requirement of the Ranco)

Also, a transformer that outputs 24Vdc will not work. If you are interested: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Alternating_current
