I think there may be some confusion about terms.

Primary is when most of the activity happens during fermentation.
Secondary is when fermentation slows but the yeast are still active and "cleaning up" byproducts of fermentation. Also known as conditioning stage. In the past people would put the beer in one carboy for primary, and then rack (siphon) the beer to another carboy for secondary fermentation. Lots of people still do this, but most I think just let everything happen in one vessel.

When you bottle, you reintroduce a small amount of sugar so that the remaining active yeast will "bottle condition" and carb up the beer.

Those bottles will absolutely handle the pressure of bottle conditioning.

If you need bottles try the recycling depot. Flip top grolsch bottles are $0.25 each. Then you don't need to worry about renting a capper.

Yes I meant conditioning.

The recycling depot visit is on my to do list.

I was just there recently and got 100+ myself of the swingtop grolsch bottles. They were on sale last week at the liquor store and most liquor stores had a big grolsch display front and center when you walked in. I'm guessing there will be a lot of empty grolsch bottles en route to the bottle depot both this week and next.

I don't think I've ever actually had Grolsch beer... had lots of beer from Grolsh bottles but have never drank the stuff

I bought a 4 pack yesterday. It doesn't taste that bad, but it gave me acid reflux.

For about 2 months when I was first brewing I insisted that my roommates drink nothing but Grolsh swing tops. I'm not very fond of the stuff.

Just picked up 60 flip top bottles at the depot. Some of them are Grimross and other 750ml and 1000ml.  :wavebeer:

Grimross bottles? Really? Do people not know they can take them back to Grimross to refill them? Pay what? $5 for the bottle from Grimross, and the recycle depot gives you maybe 10cents to return the bottle?

Yah don't take growlers to the recycle depot!

Yea it's actually quite common to find growlers there. Let's say you go to a party somewhere bring a growler full forget it there the next day they clean up and bring empty bottles to the redemption center. Not knowing or caring about the difference between a bottle or a growler. So if ya want a growler from a particular place check the redemption center first and pay .25$ instead of full price...

Alain2

I guess they were gifts and people didn't know they could refill them.

Got a couple of Grimross ones here I just take back with me. Also 3 Hill Farmstead ones I got over the summer. Hoping some of the new breweries opening up with growler sales will fill them, without having to buy new. Chances are slim I will be back to Hill Farmstead for awhile, especially if the exchange on US currency stays tanked.

Roger

I feel your pain Hill Farmstead has some terrific beers but the exchange rate sucks! Vermont is awesome for beer. The Alchemist, Lawson's Finest Liquids, Long Trail, Zero Gravity, Magic Hat the list goes on and on...
