Plug and play temp controller vs building your own. $50 with free shipping doesn't seem like a bad price.

Looks like a good deal really. Noble Grape sells a cooling only analog version for about $100. OBK sells a similar unit for $55 I think, although @DeMerch had one that fried on him in just a few months.

There was a discussion on HBT and they potentially are wired dangerously, and not yet proven. Take that info with a grain of salt though. http://www.homebrewtalk.com/showthread.php?t=536763

I purchased a second hand STC-1000 build from a previous club member. If you're mildly handy and like projects, this is the route I would go.

I just put together an STC-1000 build. I couldn't tell you what everything cost, but more than $50 for sure. That said it is satisfying (although slightly daunting) to wire something up yourself and have it work like a charm (so far at least). It wasn't hard to do the build myself anyway and I'm not particularly electrically gifted... my house hasn't burned down yet. If I had seen this earlier (I actually saw it somewhere else too, although I don't recall where) I probably would have given it a shot instead.

I did have that one that OBK sells and it froze my fridge solid... twice. OBK is now selling it for $20 (http://www.ontariobeerkegs.com/Anycontrol_AC_211_Heat_Cool_Temperature_Controller_p/ac211-temp-control.htm) with a major disclaimer, and that's probably still $30 overpriced. Don't waste your money on that thing.

To echo what some other people have said an STC-1000 build is really easy. I had very little experience wiring and I managed to put it together and its been running perfect for awhile now.

$50 seems a little steep to set one up though. I built two for less than that.
