Someone should really check what these bottles are rated for; I have a suspicion 30PSI is pushing it, and that's before cutting holes in the side :P

Richard, I've made brew in these and way over carbonated in them.  They were hard as a rock cold.  That's why they were the only vessel I could think to use.  I'm going to keep this at 30psi for the next week and see if it holds...if it does then I think it's a good fit.  I don't think I'd use it over 25psi anyway.  I'll let you know how it works out.

Back to scavenging yeast from it...you think it would be worth while?  The stems aren't food grade.... Can't see using food grade parts on a wheel!

Brew: I wouldn't use a mason jar, they aren't meant to take pressure. A pop bottle will work though

Can someone please cite something that says these plastic bottles can handle 30PSI :P

(just a little concerned that this might become intarweb knowledge and someone less handy might get hurt)

I believe they are rated for 80psi, I'll look for a citation

It occurs to me that since the pressure you'd use (less than 8PSI) whilst blow-off was still expected is so low as to not be an issue anyway.

here's a PET bottle pressure test that a guy did.

http://waterocket.explorer.free.fr/PET_ ... htm#videos

a 2 letre bottle withstood 12 bar = 174 psi

a 1 letre bottle withstood 19.5 bar = 282 psi

if you halved that because of the valves, it's still much higher than 30 psi.

I'm comfortable using one.
