Molson recalls wide mouth bottles

Quotethe brewery has stopped shipment of the two beers in the wide mouth bottle format due to "some instances of an overly aged flavour" being reported.

Saw this this morning, laughed considerably. Obviously they're not air-tight and the beer is getting oxygenated... it doesn't exactly speak volumes for the beers they didn't recall on this one.

I've been doing some research on packaging lately and cans (not screw top cans) have hands down the best beer preservation characteristics. What I have not discovered is if you can bottle/can condition in a can... Has anyone seen anything on this? Could I be the first ever to do this?

I saw something on this in homebrew magazine a while back... worth checking out the back catalogue methinks.

Something about natural carbing in cans doesn't sit right in my head, but I have no good reason to back that up so it's probably just unfamiliarity.

Richard... I know what you mean, I thought the same thing at first, but the more I research small scale canning lines and how many craft breweries are moving in that direction, the more I see it as a postive option. I had not planned to sell my beer in stores originally because of bottling costs, but there are some small scale canning systems that may make it possible. It would be cool to experiment with some "can conditioned" beers.

All that said, I have a romantic vision of bottle conditioned Belgian/Sour beers.

Yeah I'm struggling to think of a Belgian beer besides Stella Artois that comes in cans, and struggling even more to think of a can-conditioned beer :)

First time for everything ;)

Although if you're canning sours, the cans will need a plastic coating... that stuff would have a party reacting with any kind of metal can otherwise.

Sours need to be in bottles to represent the amount of effort they entail... same way you don't serve a filet mignon in a burger bun :)

All cans do have a coating that prevents interaction with the metal.

It is probably an educational thing... once people understand that cans are actually better to preserve flavors in beer they will be more receptive. All bottles (unless coated on the outside like Dilerium Tremens) allow some UV to enter and spoil the beer. Early innovators are rarely accepted.

While I agree with you, I believe I heard this about 20 years ago, and I'm not sure that there will ever be a time when people will understand. It's an imaging thing, people love a sexy bottle.
