Any chance we could increase the the number of hours that a new post sits in the "View New Posts" link at the top?  I check new posts with that link most of the time and find that I keep missing new posts, and later find them buried in their respective sections.

Seems like they disappear from the new posts section within an hour or two.  

Maybe this is something that I configure on my end?

Why not try "View unread" instead? That's what I use, and I don't think it expires.

BTW "New Posts" are "New this time you logged in", unread posts is (I think) what you want - until you've viewed a thread, it's unread. On the other hand if you logged in, didn't read some stuff, logged in again, and checked new posts - the stuff you didn't read in the first login would be gone.

ok, so "view unread posts" are posts that I haven't read yet...perfect.
