Title: Kegerator -Build or Buy?
Post by: mf5895 on August 24, 2011, 10:18:03 AM
Hey guys, wondering whether its worth it to buy a kegerator or to just buy a mini fridge and a conversion kit and assemble it myself?
Cheers!

If you're remotely handy, building will offer many more options and places to put kegs than anything affordable pre-made.

Also, I'd consider getting a freezer + temperature controller rather than a fridge, as they generally offer more room.

Make sure its frost free, and I second Richard.

Even if it's not frost-free, you can just get some baking soda to deal with that :P

Good to know! id like something that would be able to fit at least 2 corny kegs, maybe if i had enough room i could go bigger :D Whats the ideal temperature for the temp regulator to be set at?

Depends what you're doing with it. If you use it as a fermentation chamber it would be higher than say if you were lagering. I keep mine at 2-3C at the moment.

Which controller are you using Richard, and where did you get it?

(I think that answers both sides of that question)

aah I see said the blind man. I was hoping you'd found it locally - I've never used ebay and don't plan on starting if I don't have to.

I bought a 4.4 cubic foot bar fridge and just stuck a keg and CO2 in the fridge.  I'm still using the pinic tap to dispense ( so I have to open the door) until I get around to installing a tap in the door.  Easy peesy.

Bar fridge - $80 used
Perlic tap, shank and misc pieces  - ~$70 via Hopdawgs.ca
--------------------------------
$150

Im probably going to go with mini fridge with 2 tap tower and wife wont mind it being in the kitchen as it will be not so bad to look at VS big old freezer

Dave, a little work with some 1/4" plywood and some stain and you could get away with a keezer in the damn living room!  (that's my plan anyway)

Indeed, even with no power tools except a drill and no place to work outside. I reduced the ugliness of my kegerator significantly by putting a plywood skin on it and staining the plywood with cooking oil (sunflower).

LOL

you know ...I have a garage, a BIG shed, lots of outdoor room, power tools, and a little know-how ...if ever ANY of you apartment dwellers need the space/tools to work on a project for f%^ck's sake speak up!!  I also have a welder that I know how to use, the tools and knowhow to do a bit of metal fabrication and likely enough auomotive mechanical knowledge to save someone a lot of money if you're ever in need

I likely won't blow up your landlord's car though ....
