Title: Looking for Victory malt
Post by: Ian Grant on November 27, 2012, 11:28:26 AM
Does anyone have 8oz of Victory malt they can spare?  Not Amber but actual Victory malt.  I want the fresh baked bread taste in a brown ale that I want to do.  I'm going with Nottingham yeast to help that flavor out as well.

Funny.  I just used the last pound this weekend. I think I got that from Noble Grape.  We can't get this through the club.

Ya I look on there website but they say victory/amber/biscuit are the same.  I've made bitters with amber and I'm not getting the bready flavor i want.

They're potential subs, but quite different.

Posted yesterday on OBK's facebook page:

All the CMG malts are now here. Victory, Pearl, Golden Promise, so on. And DME/LME.

Not sure if up on website, but prices on everything else seem pretty reasonable.

Amber malt is nowhere near any Victory or Biscuit. Glad you're not taking that route.

If money and time isn't an issue go ahead and order it.

Another option is you can roast some 2 row in the oven and it'll give you something decent to work with.
Put a pound of 2-row on a cookie sheet, evenly distributed. Insert grain into a preheated 275F oven for 25-30 min, stirring the grain at 15 min. It gives a nice lightly toasted flavor.
Then put it in a paper bag to allow some of the gases to escape and you're on your way.

This bit is important - I skipped this step and the beer had a harsh bite to it. Leave it overnight to mellow out.

If you do order Victory from OBK, I'd like a pound as well if you're interested in letting me go in with you... I'd like to redo the Fat Squirrel with Victory - supposed to have that nutty flavor not found in Amber...

Well I'd like to order some but I'd like to wait and share on shipping. Lets wait a week and see who wants to join in an order.

5lbs flaked wheat

I can give you a tenth of flaked wheat now if you need it...

It's not an emergency, but thanks brew!  I was just unable to buy any in the last order due to lack of interest.  I've taken to throwing some into most of my beers for body.  5lbs is cheap on OBK.

Yeah, their price isn't bad, only 25% more than our split price on the flaked wheat. (40% higher than the 2/10ths price, but that's a quirk of the split formula)

I have enough in the pipeline to add a tenth for you on this split as well if the order doesn't happen through OBK. Let me know.
