DIY longdraw draft system on the cheap
« on: June 06, 2011, 11:32:16 AM »
So, I'm envisioning a big FROST FREE chest freezer in the basement with a pile of kegs it in, and a 6-tap trunkline going to a tower on the floor above. The pump would sit in a 5 gal water bucket with lid on in the freezer, and there would be a low-water sensor to prevent dry-running of the pump.

Pump with 8' vertical force:

I would have the pump on a timer so that it would only run during beer-drinking hours. I.E. not wasting energy by running when not needed.

Trunkline Option 1:
I would then take my 6 beer lines and bundle them with a 1/2'' copper pipe that went up from the freezer, into the tower, and back down into the freezer.  The bundle would be put into a 2" ABS or PVC pipe, and I would use a sealed airspace between the 2" pipe and a 4'' pipe around it to create temperature insulation.

Trunkline Option 2 (with two spare lines for future expansion):

What are your thoughts on the feasibility of this?

This was discussed at the meeting, I can't recall if you were in on the conversation though. I know Jake and Thomas were though.

Personally, I would abandon the copper pipe because unless you're running refrigerant (ie:freon) through it, I doubt it'd be very effective. I'd also do away with the 4" pvc - run the beer lines through 2" pvc and seal both ends, put a fitting at each end and essentially build a 2" pvc version of a wort chiller ...pump cold water in the top and out the bottom. I'm pretty certain it would work and only cost a few bucks to build

Sounds like a plan, thanks.
