Title: New (this) Site
Post by: Richard on January 10, 2011, 11:14:13 PM
Ok, so I said I'd write up some ideas & points for discussion on Friday. Anything people have to add before then can only be good.

This is pretty much turning into a requirements-engineering session, but I'll try to keep this to-the-point.

Ok, so, the features of this site that I'd like to see are:
1. Forum (done)
2. Reference Content e.g. recipes, styles, techniques; editing and revision control
2.1. connection between (2) and (1) in some non-awkward fashion. Potentially extend BBCode (and associated editor buttons) for linking to wiki topics, basically URL tag modified to be a WIKI tag.
3. video + audio + photo; storage + playback; probably with some external hosting provider due to bandwidth constraints (youtube/flickr/etc)
4. recipe and process calculators; with an archived store of each user's recipes.

bah, I'm drawing a blank atm but I know I had more to add to this.

If you had a wish-list, what would it be?

some other ideas:

* reviews of commercial beers + links to clone recipes with reviews thereof.
* calendar for meetings + other events
* links, descriptions, and reviews of suppliers.

Is there a way we can send messages to more than 4 people at once? That seems to be the current limit.

any way to set it up so that you receive email notifications for threads you've replied in? I received notifications for the PM's sent out...but don't receive them for the threads. just being curious..

well if you don't post in a thread you can subscribe to it (there's a link at the top), and if you do post in it, one of the options below the message body is "Notify me when a reply is posted". You can change this to be the default by going to "User Control Panel" at the top, then selecting "Board Preferences" and "Edit Posting Defaults"

Don't be afraid to ask questions.

It's be nice if there was an actual "Inventory" Page or spreadsheet going.

Just a page where people who are willing to trade grains and hops can input/update thier own inventory, and view what other willing traders have currently.

I think there might be a PHP template that gamers use for MMOs to list what they have for inventory for craftables to trade with guildmates that might be adaptable. I can look into it if anyone's interested in something of the likes.

Gil: I'm all about the leveraging of existing open source software... If you can find a PHP app we can tweak a little for our ends, I'll get it up and running.

Are you in computers, by trade?

Im INTO comps, just not in the profession.

I just game a lot, so I end up being a forum mod for a lot of communities. A lotta cool little tidbts you pick up doing so.

That and I geek it up when I can.  :ugeek:
