Barley Wine
« on: February 25, 2016, 04:14:47 PM »
A bunch of us border folks (NB/NS) got together last July to make a RIS to go into an oak barrel (approx. 200 litres).  The RIS is ready to be kegged/bottled.  Rather than letting the barrel go to waste, planning to do a Barley Wine for next winter and refill the oak at the same time.

Looking for a Barley Wine Recipe (British), something in the 11 - 12%ABV, 50 IBU with a nice malty character.

Any experience out there?

Why brew beer that I can buy?

There's a couple recipes for Barleywine on the forum recipes under strong ale. I haven't done one yet but I've done a bunch of winter warmers that turned out great.

Here's the preliminary grain bill for the Barley Wine, keep in mind, it's 50 gallons.

55 lbs Maris Otter, Pale Malt
55 lbs Munich Type 2
110 lbs of Canadian 2 row.

OG @ 1.115
SRM @ 15.2
ABV @ 12.3

British Ale Mangrove Jack Yeast.

Just for fun, I threw 1 lb of EKG into BeerSmith and got 7.1 IBU, shooting for 50 ish.

Need some suggestions on hops.

Keep in mind, this will be brewed in two sessions, 25 gallons a piece.

Any and all input would be appreciated.

Cheers.
