Title: Gallon per year
Post by: Alain2 on January 25, 2016, 02:20:52 PM
I see people talking about 20 gallon kettle and I'm now wondering how many gallon of beer do you make per year?

I'm planning 35-40 gallon, if I'm lucky 50 max.

35 gallons is only 7 brews. Barely more than one brew day per two months . I'd say most guys here brew more than that. I brew every 2-3 weeks.
 Some brew days are to be turned around quickly, others to age for up to 18 months.

I probably average 15 brews per year, so 75 gallons or so

I'm probably averaging upwards of 150 gallons per year. I don't want to sound like I need a 12 step program or anything.  Keep in mind that's enough beer for me, my friend's, family, any competitions I enter and of course meetings. At 50 gallons a year that's only about 400 glasses of beer...
If you only plan to go through 8 Glases of beer per week through the course of a year. Than your good to go.

Let's not forget the actual amount that's hitting your kegs or bottles. Brewing a 5 gallon batch of DIPA with a heavy amount of dry hops leads to quite a loss of beer. Simply stated a 5 gallon batch in this case could lead to only 4 gallons at packaging. Or less depending on how much of a hop head you are.

I only really started all grain in October although I've done 5 batches in those 4 months. I might have to increase production as people other than my wife and I are actually willing to drink the stuff :)

Brewing amounts have been going down due to life events:
2012 = 36 batches, 2013 = 36 batches, 2014 = 27 batches, 2015 = 20 batches.
Need to get a vasectomy.

I did about 45 gallons a year for a long time, but then went to 120+ gallons a year in 2012-2014, 86 in 2015, and none so far in 2016. All that high gravity goodness combined with some other lifestyle factors led to major weight gain for me. I've still got about 15 gallons from 2015 for the occasional quaff and for sharing, but until I get myself back on the road to fitness, I'm limiting my intake to five units of alcohol per week (i.e. one bottle of wine or a couple pints of my RIS). Any more, and the scale gives me bad news.

I hear that! But i think as long as you're active and eat right there's no reason you can't indulge yourself once in a while. I live by the philosophy of working for you beer. I find if I go for a good 5-10 km hike a few times a week I can treat myself to a few brews but it's sometimes hard to find the time. Over the last year or so I've noticed a 15-20 lb weight gain but that's because I've been a bit lazy as of late. This last week I've put on about 15km on the snowshoes so I feel fine with having a couple brews as I write this.

For the last 5 years I’ve brewed a about 25 batches per year which makes about 2 batches per month.  Usually I brew a regular beer then the next one is something that need aging (ie RIS, barleywine, sours)
I’ll usually drink 1L on weekdays and on weekends twice as much and usually with some wine and/or spirits

average about a brew and a half a month, say 25 gallons, or 300 gallons/year.  Too many relatives, me thinks.   :-X
