What a mess, I don't use air locks any more trying to avoid that.

That or he does what I do and use a blow-off tube... although that probably does nothing to reduce the risk of this kinda thing.

I've brewed almost 40 kegs of beer since Christmas, and I've never even come close to needing a blow-off tube.  Of course, I only have about 5.25 gallons in a 6.5 gallon carboy.

That'll do it - head space is the key to avoiding it altogether. I just have a bad habit of filling to six gallons 'cause I want 5.5 in a keg at the end of the day..
