contest suggestions
« on: August 09, 2011, 12:08:27 PM »
Oct - IPA
Jan - Stout
April - Irish Red
July - Lawnmower

This is Just a thought for the next 4 competitions

I did have a few issues with the last competition

I think to really get any benifit out of doing these we need to stick to style guidlines so that the beers themself taste relativly the same but any faults would be in the brewing process itself VS it just tastes different due to Grain bill

I would vote for that for the actual "competition". Also, if we still wanted to do something like what we had at the last meeting we could schedule a theme for the meetings ....example: "mid-september meeting = fall brews" and we'd have maybe a pumpkin ale, cinnamon stout, etc ...that way everyone could be a "judge" and we'd have a favourite entry by the end of the meeting, and the winner gets bragging rights

+1 to both of you; I figure we could set the dates then bisect every interval with a non-BJCP category e.g. "Summer Ales", "Lawnmower Beer" which we can define the boundaries for ourselves (as per the last comp).

Dave: I suspect it would be best if we switched Lawnmower to the non-BJCP. Perhaps July should be cream ale, or hybrid light in general?

Here's a simple way to handle it...
Dave...
You're in charge of all competition related things...

Come up with 4 BJCP categories, and 4 non-BJCP categories. Run them on an alternating roughly 6 week cycle per RB and Dean's suggestions... (with maybe December (or Mid-Dec to Mid-Jan) off so your 8 competitions are spread across the remaining 48 brewing weeks.)

Let us know what the plan is for the next year, we'll all say aye.
In a year from now, if you've done a shite job, we'll fire you, but most likely we'll all just suck you in to doing it for one more year!

I think Jake's would be halfway between a pale ale and a hefe.

Dean: you started with his summer ale, then he switched the tanks to IPA. Everything after we got outside the last time at Jake's was IPA.

Jake's summer ale was like a cross between a pale ale and a fruit american wheat (imho not enough esters/phenols for a hefeweizen).

IPAs don't have to be hop-bombs, and that certainly wasn't.

You must like your hop-bombs defused.

I'll get my coat.

yeah Richard's right, I'd call Jake's contest entry a pale ale--wheat beer hybrid, rather than a pale ale-- hefe one.
