if it is still during primary fermentation with lots of activity, cover the top with some steril tinfoil so that it wraps around and over the lips of the carboy. Same as how you would cover the top of a starter flask.

I saw rags used in such circumstances in university daze where I didn't know or care better. The result was still better than BMC for me to ask for it :D

More seriously; if you need BO-tubes I got some spare with carboy-bungs. If you're using buckets for primary then you can ram a tube onto the top of a standard plastic airlock (from my first brew - kabooom!)

Dave,

Was this the same wort that spent the night outside...perhaps you're on to something, a pre-pitch freeze thaw cycle to improve fermentation!

nah S04 will do this every time with a gravity above 1.050 -- it's real quick off the blocks.

I'd usually leave down to the 2nd line as space -- means I'd only really be doing 5US gal each time, but you'd lose a bunch from blowoff otherwise... if you filled up to anywhere near the top you'll have had real epic blowoff.

yeah, that's too full.  Use a 6.5 (US) gal carboy for a 5.5 gal batch, that way it will nicely fit in the keg, even after you account for trub volume.

Otherwise, 1.5-2 inches below the curve is generally a good max fill line

I would have probably needed 5 Inches below Ive never had a fermentation go so fast and hard I hooked up a blow off tube from some old beer gas line and no word of a lie the bubbles are constant and I can hear it bubbling in the room over but the amarillo and cascade hops are filling the room with grapefruity goodness

anyoen know if noble grape carry and dry yeast in store ? think Im going to brew again sunday i have 4 free carboys so I better get cracking ( they will have loads of time to age if I brew a shitload    building a wort chiller on Saturday goint with 50FT 3/8 I think

for comparison, mine in 25' of 3/8" O.D. It generally takes 1/2 hour to get from 212F to 70F.  50 feet sounds like a plan. I was unable to find a local supplier of that length, you may consider running 2 25' coils in series.
