Title: 15.5 Gallon Sanke as Fermenter?
Post by: RossBee on February 26, 2016, 06:21:03 PM
Broke down a 15.5 ga Sanke today, full of Labatt's, vintage 2006, re-kegged, brother-in-law will love it (??? Yes, I know!).

To the point of my question.  This partiular keg had one of those twist thread spears in it with the locking ring that is extremely hard to get out (not the usual split spring rings).  Took about an hour to get the thing out and it's not the easiest to put back in.

Question, has anyone used Sanke's for fermentors?  A #11 bung fits perfectly in the opening, however, I'm worried about cleaning - especially the underside of the top.

Additionally, has anyone ever modified a Sanke with, say a 6" tri-clamp fitting at the top?  Who could do such modifications?

I would hate to make a coffee table out of the thing if I could modify it to make something useful instead.

Cheers,

I use a regular Sankey once in a while like right now and it works great. To clean I use a PBW or Oxyclean soak and a home made carboy scrubber. http://www.amazon.com/gp/aw/s//ref=mw_dp_a_s?ie=UTF8&k=Clean+Bottle+Express
Its best to use this time of year because it's a bitch to move around like in and out of a frem chamber.

Tried the mirror on a stick and flash light trick to see if the underside of the bottom is clean, but can't seem to able to see anything.  Worried about sanitation, especially the foam crap that stick to the top, perhaps over-reacting on my part.

They are designed to be cleaned in place, so there should be no sanitation concerns. Also, if it's an American "D" style keg, a 2 inch tri-clamp will fit the lip.
