Title: Hop shoots
Post by: Roger on April 26, 2016, 07:44:49 PM
So I decided to cut down a bunch of the little first hop shoots today and have them with supper. I've heard of eating them before and I assumed they would be bitter and fiberous. But to my dismay they were tender and delicious...
I sauteed them in butter for 2 minutes after one minute I added some fresh chives and finished with a bit of S&P. They reminded me of fiddle heads. I highly recomend trying it.
They recommend not training the first bunch of bines and cutting them down anyways. Apparently they're not as strong and hardy as the second wave of bines. So might as well eat them.

I said they remind me of fiddleheads... They also remind me of asparagus. Some people have no taste...  :P

Don't mind Asparagus, but you can keep the fiddleheads.....and no.....they don't taste the same.

I thought the water from boiling fiddleheads was toxic.

The water that came out of the pot kind of looked like wort but no, I was using the pot to blanch fiddleheads. I had five of those buckets you see in the photo to do.
