Reflectix on Keggle
« on: February 27, 2012, 09:12:17 AM »
So after wrapping my keggle in reflectix (that tin foil looking stuff) it looked really nice, drained the sparge into my shiny new Keggle complete with sight tube and sat er on the propane burner. After a while there was that nice plastic burning smell - DOH!! that stuff actually is like plastic bubble wrap inside, and propane will melt it! Yuk... beer still smelled OK though...

Wondering if I should just take it all off, or maybe just leave it on the top half... or replace it with something else...

As a side note, it was first time with my new "hop blocker" - no hop sock, just a stainless braided hose and a little copper. Worked great, but it did let a little bit more hops through than what I normally see with the sock - I'm interested in how the hop profile comes out on this.

I have a 16 gallon wide-mouth stock pot that I've wrapped in this stuff.  I've used it on my propane burner with no melting.  I'm guessing you had the burner turned up enough for the flames to start up the sides of the keggle a bit.

Interesting.  I never did a proper test before I wrapped my kettle, so I'm not sure what the gain was.  I do know I can touch the side now, so it must have some effect.

The bottom of a Keg is rounded and the sides come down just below the lowest point of the bottom (center) making a collar. The flames go up around the bottom but can't go up the sides as they are blocked (except for 4 small holes around the collar where it meets the body). So no flames up around the sides of the keg - but it does get pretty darn hot down there! I have to say though, it did stand up pretty well considering the BTU's I was throwing at it!

Yep - home cheapo - end of the insulation isle... I think Kyle got his at Kents...

I only cut the bottom half of the reflectix off my Keggle, left it on the top half. Makes it less hot to touch if you brush up against it.
