Hydrometer calibration
« on: February 22, 2012, 07:50:25 PM »
How many of you check your hydrometer calibration? I have 4 and I just checked them and on the same sample they were:

1. 1.040
2. 1.038
3. 1.036
4. 1.034

Being off by 6 points is a lot, mai no?

I've been liking my refractometer.  I think I paid $30 shipped on eBay for one with automatic temperature correction.

I had one hydrometer that was giving unexpected ratings, and then I noticed the paper sleeve on the inside had slipped down the glass tube about 3/8 of an inch. Replacing it and testing against a third one for accuracy was the solution.

Richard - Yes, samples were at room temp. Also, when I tested all 4 hydrometers in H2O, they were all spot on!? In an ideal situation I would have several samples at various SG  throughout to test...
