I found Canadian Tire was the cheapest.  $6-7.  Just make sure you get the SS version and not the plastic one that LOOKS like SS.

Home Depot sells a 5' SS dishwasher hose for $15, that's what I use now.

Sounds good. Did you just order one of the weldless bulkhead valves from hopdawgs?

Im just getting my Keg cut now so I will be looking to hook my ball valve with some sort of hop screen onto it.

Hmmm.  The lack of DIY projects lately has let me to the decision to rebuild my keggle tonight.  I am going to try the SS braid again.  I'll need to remake my pick up tube so that it doesn't drop right down into the centre.  I think I'll position it so that I can use the braid in a ring about 8" in diameter.  I'll have a T at the end of the pick up tube so that in case something does clog, there will be another route for the wort.

I'll keep take pictures along the way.  Maybe it'd make a good DIY project page for the wiki.

Actually, Kyle, Can you take a couple pics of yours with the 5' dishwasher hose also?

I assume you mean this hose?

Anyone ever try one of these? http://www.ihomebrewsolutions.com/TheHopStopper.pdf

I use SS braided hose - goes around the inside of my boil kettle. It clogs up a lot near the end of the drain through my CFC - I've reached in with the stir spoon to try and scrape the hops off to let it drain better - that even after a whirlpool. I'm seriously considering one of those hop stoppers, but I'm not sure if it would work as good as they say it does...

Um... why not? I'm pretty sure you want the suction at the lowest point of the kettle or you will definitely get more dead-space. What's wrong with doing the tube in the center, to a T-piece, to a double loop (figure of eight) ?

I forget where I saw it but this thing has a bad reputation for clogging.

Use more hose - if I've managed to stick a pound of hops on mine without a clog you shouldn't have any clogging at all (You don't make IPA's, that I can recall)... you sure you're not losing siphon due to bad placement of the dip-tube/siphone cane?

Yeah its not siphon loss as it starts to slow down before the level of wort goes below the weldless bulkhead. I may need more hose - currently its only enough to go around the inside of the kettle... My tee is out near the bulkhead, maybe I'll bring that into the center and get a longer piece of SS to do the figure 8 thing...

Maybe move your kettle higher up before you siphon, or get a pump...

For people using propane, the hose will float with all the air bubbles from the boil, so you will want to weigh it down. This can easily be done by making it into a loose coil and wrapping a couple of peices of copper tubing around it.

That's a lot of break material.  Do you ever have trouble with this not draining well?  It looks like you have quite a bit of dead space there.  How much wort do you lose, or do you just tip the kettle when it gets low?
