cutting top of sanky keg to make a keggle
« on: April 05, 2014, 11:52:23 AM »
I have a 50 l sankey keg I want to turn into a keggle. It is a Guinness keg and I am pretty sure it is SS although it is buried in my shed so I have not seen it lately sure it is SS although it is buried in my shed so I have not seen it lately.  So the options I have is to find someone with a plasma cutter or use a dremel tool with a metal disk or 10.  Anyone have any opinions on the best way to do this?  I have a dremel so can do it myself.  I contacted someone one kijiji with a plasma cutter and he will charge $25 to cut the top off if it is SS.  Fair price I think.  If aluminum, he asked me to pick up a metal disk and he will still do it but for that price I will do it myself.

Best bet is an angle grinder. Google how to make a jig to do this. This is how mine was done.

Ive done this for a few people in the club. If you buy a 4.5 inch cutting disc and bring it over we can cut it at my place...

You can do it freehand without a jig no problem but I wanted to have a perfectly round hole. All the jig does is fit inside the hole on the top and spin around in a circle with an angle grinder attached to one end. You just go back and forth until it's cut through.

This is the jig I was talking about and the hole it leaves. The hardest part was removing the Guinness spear it's much different than the Sankey "D". After that it was a few minutes to cut and a few more to clean up the burrs.
