Instead of going the route of using clarifiers, I decided to try out a real cheap filtering system the local brew shop had on sale. I believe others on the forum have mentioned they have the same one. it comes with an air pump (2.5psi), a bunch of hoses, a cap for your carboy, and 2 big orange plates that the filters go in.
Well, first impressions are:
unless you have over an hour to kill waiting for a carboy of stout to filter, don't bother....or just don't try fitering stout!
Not very impressed with the setup, but again, could be because I was excited and attempted to fiter stout. Took over an hour, but I was surprised at how clean the beer was coming out the filtered side.
I'm going to do another run through the filter with a lighter beer next time, and if it is still slow, I'm going to frankenstein the filter setup with a couple of liquid ball fittings fittings so I can force beer through the filter at a little higher psi than 2.5 using two kegs. I'm thinking 5-7psi would be fine.
I did notice, with a small sip, that the filtered stout did taste...well, more polished is all I can come up with. The mouth feel was clean, and I found a bit more of an expresso flavor than the unfiltered kegged stout.
Anyways, just thought I'd share.
