Wind problems
« on: November 16, 2015, 11:18:04 AM »
Hey all,

I've had some troubles brewing in the wind. I have a blichmann burner that has a built in wind shroud, but it really struggles in the wind. I notice in lighter winds it will take longer to heat up the pot, and if it's a heavy wind or gusty at all, then the flame will blow out.

I'm wondering if I'm just not adjusting the burner properly, or if I need to construct a wind shroud. Searching HBT, I can't seem to find people having similar troubles so I'm thinking it may be me. I usually adjust it so that the flames are blue and shooting up about 3/4 of an inch.

I don't have a blichmann so I can't comment on that specifically. But when it gets colder I mash in my kitchen and boil on my deck. I have trouble with wind as well. Last year I put up insulation panels that I had laying around on two sides. It helped some. I always put my burner as high as possible as long as it keeps a blue flame.

Sorry, I know that's not really any help. The wind is a bitch!

Thanks @robcoombs , glad to know it's not just me at least. I like to multi task when brewing, cleaning, measuring hops etc... so it's a PITA to babysit the burner to make sure it doesn't blow out.

Not that that's a problem for me. But I assume your using your balcony so if you got some plywood or some kind of material  to make panels and attached them on at least two of your railings that should cut down on the wind. Just a thought...
