5 GAL Mash tuns at Canadian Tire?
« on: August 22, 2011, 04:33:15 PM »
I was checking out Canadian Tire for coolers and stumbled upon this:

http://www.canadiantire.ca/AST/browse/5 ... ?locale=en

I wonder if a couple of these couldn't be converted into a hot liquor tank and mash tun?  for $39.00 a piece, it would be very economical.

Thats what I'm using for my tun and it handles mashing temps with no issues.

I'd strongly recommend the 12 gallon coleman from wal-mart:

I got mine from the northside wal-mart, for a fair bit less than 40 bucks. I think it was on sale, though.

I've currently got the 5 Gal coleman and its been OK but I'm limited to an OG around 1.06.  My new and improved system will use a 15.6 Gal Sanke to Tun and another 15.6 as a kettle.  So far so good.

Yeah, for a five gallon batch something around 10 or 12 gallons is best for your mash tun. Otherwise its hard to get good results with beers above 6% abv.

While I've heard stuff about the circular ones being ideal, I use a standard rectangle one with a stainless steel braid and it works great

HD usually marks theirs down (5g round like in the link) cheaper towards the end of the summer/early fall.

The one Richard mentioned, they were on sale for 19.83 for a while...they might still be on sale, check the walmarts.

Thanks for the advice.  Definitely wouldn't want to be limited to 6%.

Home hardware has a listing for them, but would have to order it. Same with Akland and grainer....they're pricey...don't say i didn't warn you.. :D

From what i remember, home hardware was much cheaper.

$123. Ouch.

I'll repeat that the 48qt Coleman works just fine
