Smells Like Summer IPA
« on: May 01, 2012, 11:46:49 AM »
Trying to shoot for something to repeat over and over for the summer; something clean, hoppy, and generally refreshing. For that reason, the crystal and mashing temps are kept rather low to ensure a dry finish, and the alcohol is targeted at 5% - anything above likely requiring a longer turnaround than I'm looking for. Hop profile is similar to the IPAs I've made of late - tropical and a touch spicy.

Edit: in case you noticed, I moved this from APA to IPA... since I added the gypsum the hops are considerably more pronounced.

9lbs 2-row.
1lbs sucrose.
0.25lbs Cara-foam.
0.25lbs Caramunich-II.

0.5oz Magnum 14% @ 60
0.5oz Simcoe 13% @ 60
1.0oz Simcoe 13% @ 20
1.0oz Palisade 7% @ 20
2.0oz Cascade 7% @ 0

Dry-hop 1 week w/0.5oz Cascade, 0.5oz Simcoe, 0.5oz Palisade.

Mash 4 gallons @ 149, Sparge 4 gallons @ 168.

w/Fredericton Municipal Water: Add 0.75 tsp each to mash and strike water.

Drinking this stuff now; tastes & smells beautful - not carbed enough yet and still rather warm. This'll do just fine for a summer APA.

Final gravity was 1.006 thanks to the sucrose and mash profile - pretty much what I was shooting for. Nice and dry - perhaps too bitter for an APA because of it; tastes like the same bitterness as the Garrison's Hop Yard, which they claim is a pale ale, and I've always said is a good introduction to IPA for non-hopheads. Tastes like 40 IBUs. I will be re-running this, probably tomorrow, re-using the yeast cake from this.

Nice!  Yeah i was going to say you got quite a hop bill for a PA!  Sounds delicious though!

I'm brewing a very slight variation of you v2 black ipa tomorrow night with a smaller hop bill and aiming for a light 4-4.5%.

i've been into the light summer ales of late and am going to redo a number of high gravity recipes as light versions and see how they taste.

I'm even considering brewing parti gyle style all summer, hoarding the heavies for fall and drinking the lights throughout the summer.

Aye man; I tend to drink beer for refreshment in the summer - this is about the level I'd like for that.

Although I gotta say - it might be a little too bitter for drinking in the sun. I might re-spin something at about 4% with about 25-30 IBUs, as an alternative for the real hot days.
