IPA - Kyle and Brent's St. Pat's day brew
« on: March 19, 2012, 08:01:01 PM »
This was a bit of a gong show, but here it is for posterity:

19.5# Marris Otter
1# Weyermann CaraMunich II
2# Amber malt

Mash with 6.75 gal water for 1 hour at 151F
Sparge with about 4 gal water at ~170F for 10 min
Sparge 2 same
Discover JQ's Camlocks are not compatible with mine and loose some wort
add "enough" more via garden hose into mash tun to make up, about a gallon

1.75oz Magnum (14%a/a) @60
2oz Cascade (6.4%a/a) @15
2 tabs whirlfloc @15
2oz Centennial (9.4%a/a) @2

I used US-05 yeast in my half, and I think Brent did as well.

Dry-hop on mine will be Chinook, 1oz for a week after primary fermentation has finished.

Hehehe I called my half Murphy's Pale Ale, as it was prettymuch Murphy in action. That being said it's fermenting, so it might not be all that bad. Time will tell.

got this on tap now, its quite good. Glad we ignored a certain hop fanatic's suggestion to use 4oz  or more of magnum.. this one still has some nice caramel malt notes between the hops. Clarity is not great, but that is mainly a function of me having nothing on tap and kegging too early.

Edit, I decided to dry hop with 1.5 oz centennial

yeah, maybe 8.5 gals total.

One of these days I'll brew an insanely high IBU IIPA, and if I find it to be like drinking sandpaper, you and Richard will be in luck.

I have a 9.2% IIPA that used 4.5oz of magnum hops in 5.5 gallons... clearly Kyle does not want any :P

Senior, I'm struggling to decypher the meaning of your symbol talk...

Is it, "I have the shakes, but now I had a stout, and then I turned into an evil bastard"??  Close?

yeah, love the hops...haven't met a beer yet that I found too hoppy...

I even throw whole leaf hops in my mouth like chewing tabacco when I brew....
"If God had intended for us to drink beer, He would have given us stomachs."
